Welcome to Maryland - New Residents & State Inspections

We've recently updated our state inspection page and think it's a good time to speak more on MD state safety inspections in regard to new residents (although used car sellers should also pay attention to the service). As a licensed Maryland inspection station, it shouldn't be a surprise that state inspections are a big part of what the team at Ken's Service Center do. We're proud to be certified, and we hope you find this additional information helpful as you get your bearings.

New Resident Vehicle Registration

First, a hearty welcome to Maryland. There's a lot of good things to be found here, and we hope you have fun exploring and integrating into the community. Chances are, you have a lot on your mind right now; paperwork here, paperwork there. We get it, and we know it's very easy to forget things or feel overwhelmed. By now, you know your car registration (or other vehicle registration) is a part of your "to-do" list pile. The good news is you have a bit of time to play with, but you don't want to delay too long.

What Do I Need to Do?

To register your vehicle so it's Maryland-legal (and so you get our spiffy Maryland license plate), you need to work with our Motor Vehicle Administration. They'll give you a lot of information on their website with specifics, exemptions, and so forth, but here's the lowdown:

  • You must register your vehicle(s) within 60 days of moving to Maryland (otherwise you may lose tax credit and become at risk for out-of-state citations)
  • You can apply for a title and registration at the MVA branch nearest to you or mail the documents the MVA requests to the address specified to you on the MVA website.
  • Documents needed include Proof of Ownership, Application for Certificate of Title, Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate, Proof of Vehicle's Value, Lease Agreement and Payment Proof (if applicable), Lien Information, Lein Release, and Power of Attorney (if applicable).

The safety inspection is where we can help. You'll need this to successfully register your vehicle(s) in Maryland, even if you recently passed an inspection in another state. It generally doesn't take too long (ask us for a time estimate) and we'll be able to get your on your way. Before you schedule, check with the MVA to see if you will need a 30-day temporary registration to legally drive to one of our locations.

We hope this helps and look forward to helping you get one more item checked off your list in a timely manner. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our Columbia state inspection station or Hanover state inspection station for more information.
